The Monkey and the Camel
원숭이와 낙타

At a great celebration for the king lion, a monkey was asked to dance for the guests.
He danced very well, and the animals were all very pleased with his dance.
A camel at the party got really jealous after hearing everyone praise the monkey.
He was sure that he could dance just as well as the monkey, if not better.
So, he pushed his way into the crowd that gatherd around the monkey and began to dance.
But the big camel looked ridiculous as he kicked his knotty legs and twisted his long, clumsy neck.
Basides, the animals found it hard to stay away and out from under his heavy hooves.
Finally, when one of his huge feet came within an inch of the king lion's nose,
the animals were so furious that they kicked the camel out and sent him back into the desert.
Do not try to ape your betters.
백수의 왕 사자의 성대한 연회에서 원숭이가 손님들을 위해 춤을 추도록 초대받았습니다.
원숭이는 춤을 아주 잘 추었으며 동물들도 원숭이의 춤을 보고 감탄했습니다.
연회에 참석한 낙타는 모두가 원숭이를 향한 칭찬을 하는 것을 듣고 매우 질투했습니다.
낙타는 자신이 원숭이보다 잘 춘다고 말할 수 없었지만, 적어도 원숭이만큼은 잘 출 수 있을 것이라고 확신했습니다.
그래서 원숭이를 구경하는 군중 사이로 몸을 들이밀고 춤추기 시작했습니다.
그러나 몸집이 큰 낙타가 울퉁불퉁한 다리를 걷어차며, 긴 목을 투박하게 비트며 춤을 추니 우스꽝스러웠습니다.
게다가, 동물들은 낙타의 무거운 발굽을 겨우 피하고 있었습니다.
결국 낙타가 발굽을 사자의 얼굴 바로 앞까지 들이대자, 동물들은 화를 내며 낙타를 사막으로 다시 내쫓았습니다.
자기보다 나은 사람을 흉내 내려하지 마세요.

1. He was sure that he could dance just as well as the monkey, if not better.
   낙타는 자신이 원숭이보다 잘 춘다고 하기엔 좀 그렇지만 적어도 원숭이만큼은 잘 출 수 있을 것이라 확신했습니다.
   • if not은 '~까지는 아니라 하더라도', '~라고 할 수 는 없더라도'를 의미하는 표현이다.
   • It is highly recommended, if not mandatory.
     필수까지는 아니지만, 강력히 권고한다.
2. The animals found it hard to stay away and out from under his heavy hooves.
   게다가, 동물들은 낙타의 무거운 발굽을 겨우 피하고 있었습니다.
   • hard to stay away from A라고 하면 'A로부터 멀어지기 어렵다'라는 뜻이다.
     found it hard to stay away from A라고 하면 'A로부터 멀어지기 어렵다는 것을 깨닫다'가 된다. 
     그대로 풀이하면 '동물들은 낙타의 무거운 발굽 아래서 벗어나기 어렵다는 것을 깨달았다'는 뜻이 된다.
   • I'm trying to diet, but it's hard to stay away from dessert.
     다이어트를 하려고 하는데 디저트를 멀리하기가 힘들어요.

• pleased : 기쁜, 기뻐하는, 만족스러운, ~하여 기쁜
• praise : 칭찬, 찬사, 찬양 / 칭찬한다, 찬송하다
• clumsy : 어설픈, 서투른, 투박한, 세련되지 못한
• knotty : 얽히고설킨, 울퉁불퉁하고 뒤틀린, 혹투성이

요구나 바람을 나타내는 want가 아닌

hope를 써서 좀 더 정중하게 표현하는 모습이다.

  제발, 제게서 떨어지세요. 떨어져요.
  • 두 번째 내용은 두 개로 나눠서 보는 게 훨씬 좋은 것 같다.
  • hard to ~ : ~하기 어렵다
  • stay away from ~ : ~ 로부터 떨어져
    특히 'Stay away from me.'는 영화나 미드, 애니 등에서 아주 많이 나오는 표현이다.
