멧돼지와 여우

A wild boar was sharpening his tusks against a tree stump.
Later, a fox came by.
Seeing the boar sharpening his tusks, the fox thought there was hidden enemy somewhere and started to lok around anxiously.
But the boar continued with his work.
"Why are you doing that?" asked the fox. "I don't see any danger."
"That's true," replied the boar, "but when danger comes there will be no time for work like this.
My tusks will have to be ready or else I'll suffer."
Preparedness for danger is the best guarantee of peace.
멧돼지가 나무 그루터기에 엄니를 갈고 있었습니다.
여우 한 마리가 지나가다 엄니를 가는 멧돼지를 보고 어딘가에 적이 있을 것이라 여겨 불안하게 주위를 둘러봤습니다.
하지만 멧돼지는 계속 엄니를 갈고 있을 뿐이었죠.
"왜 그러고 있는 거예요? 주변에 위험한 것은 아무것도 없어 보여요." 여우가 물었습니다.
"맞아, 하지만 위험이 닥치면 엄니를 갈 시간이 없어.
늘 나의 엄니를 갈고닦아야지. 아니면 내가 괴로워질 거야."
위험을 대비하는 것은 평화를 보장하는 최선의 방법입니다.

1. But the boar continued with his work.
   멧돼지는 계속 엄니를 갈고 있을 뿐이었죠.
   • work는 직장에서의 업무만이 아니라 '작업하다'라는 뜻으로도 쓰인다.
     그래서 뭔가를 멋지게 만경 경우 work of art라고 말하면
     '예술적으로 만들었네!'라는 감탄을 나타내는 것이다.
     • nice work! → 잘했어!
       work together → 힘을 합치자
       work on my paper → 리포트를 쓰다
2. My tusks will have to be ready or else I'll suffer.
   늘 나의 엄니를 갈고닦아야지, 아니면 내가 괴로워질 거야.
   • or else는 '아니면'이라는 의미가 있다.
     'A 하지 않으면 B 할 것이기 때문에 A 한다'라는 뜻.
     • I need to finish my chores today or else my mom will be angry.
       나는 오늘 집안일을 끝내야 해. 그렇지 않으면 엄마가 화낼 거야.
3. Preparedness for danger is the best guarantee of peace.
   위험에 대한 대비는 평화를 보장하는 최선의 방법입니다.
   • preparedness는 '준비가 된 상태', '각오가 된 상태'라는 뜻이다.
     prepare(준비하다)의 명사형이지만, preparation이 그저 '준비'라는 뜻이라면,
     preparedness는 준비된 마음가짐과 태도를 의미한다.
     • The government introduced new measures to improve preparedness for natural disasters.
       정부는 자연재해에 대한 대비 수준을 개선하기 위해 새로운 대책을 발표했습니다.
   • in preparation for는 숙어로 '~의 준비로', '~에 대비해'라는 의미이다.

       정부는 자연재해에 대비해 새로운 대책을 발표했습니다.

• Checking the time hasn’t always been as easy as glancing at your smartphone. 
  시간을 확인하는 것은 스마트폰을 보는 것처럼 항상 쉬운 일이 아니었습니다.
• In ancient times, humans would determine the time by using devices made of sand, stone, shadows, wheels, and more. 
  고대에 인간은 모래, 돌, 그림자, 바퀴 등으로 만든 장치를 사용해 시간을 결정했습니다
• One ancient clock that doesn’t get mentioned often enough is the famous incense clock.
  자주 언급되지 않는 고대 시계 중 하나는 향 시계가 유명합니다.
• Incense clocks were as intricate as they were accurate. 
  향 시계는 정확한 만큼 복잡했습니다.
• To make the clocks burn for an entire day, they had to be designed like small  mazes. 
  시계가 하루 종일 타게 만들려면, 작은 미로처럼 디자인해야 했습니다.
