곰과 두 친구

Two friends came across a big bear when they were traveling.
One of the friends quickly climbed up a tree and hid among the branches.
The other fell flat on the ground and held his breath as the bear got close and smelled him all over.
Eventually, the bear left, so the other man came down from the tree and asked his friend what the bear said to him.
"He gave me this advice," his friend replied.
"Never travel with a friend who leaves you alone in danger."
Misfortune tests the sincerity of friends.
두 친구가 여행 중 큰 곰과 마주쳤습니다.
한 친구는 빠르게 나무 위로 올라가 나뭇가지 사이로 숨었고,
또 다른 친구는 땅에 바짝 엎드리고 곰이 가까이 다가와 구석구석 그의 냄새를 맡자 숨을 참았습니다.
마침내 곰이 그 자리를 떠난 후, 나무 위에 숨어있던 친구가 내려와 곰이 무어라고 했는지 물었습니다.
"곰이 내게 조언을 좀 해줬늗네 말이야.
위험할 때 혼자 두고 도망치는 친구와는 절대 같이 다니지 말라더군."
불행이 닥쳤을 때 우정의 깊이가 드러나는 법입니다.

1. Two friends came across a big bear when they were traveling.
   두 친구가 여행 중 큰 곰과 마주쳤습니다.
   
   • come across는 '~을 우연히 발견하다', '~을 우연히 마주치다'라는 이다.
     come은 오다, across는 가로지르다, 맞은편 이란 의미이므로
     맞은편에서 오는 곰을 가로지르게 된 것이므로 마주친 것이 된다.
   • 또 다른 의미로 '이해되다', '~한 인상을 주다'라는 뜻도 있다.
     누군가에게 좋은 사람이라는 인상을 받았다면
     '그 사람이 나에게 좋게 다가왔다'는 뜻이다.
     즉, ~한 인상을 준다는 뜻이 된다.
   • She comes across as very intelligent.
     그녀는 정말 똑똑한 것 같다.
2. The bear got close and smelled him all over.
   곰이 가까이 다가와 구석구석 그의 냄새를 맡았다.
   
   • all over는 '온통', '사방에', '전체'라는 뜻이다.
     무엇을 all over 했는지에 따라 풀이가 달라진다.
     우화에서는 him을 all over 했으므로 구석구석으로 해석했다.
   • The children are running all over the place.
     아이들이 사방으로 뛰어다니고 있어요.
