개미와 비둘기

One day, a dove saw an ant fall into a brook.
The ant couldn't get out, so out of pity, the dovy dropped a stick close to it.
Clinging to the stick, the ant safely crawled out of the brook.
Shortly after, the ant saw a man getting ready to kill the dove with a stone.
Right as he threw the stone, the ant bit him on the heel.
The pain made him miss his target, and the startled dove flew safely to the woods.
Kindness is never wasted.
어느 날, 비둘기가 개울에 빠진 개미를 보았습니다.
개미가 빠져나오지 못하자, 비둘기는 동정심에 나뭇가지를 가까이 떨어뜨렸습니다.
나뭇가지에 매달린 개미는 덕분에 안전하게 기어 나올 수 있었습니다.
얼마 지나지 않아, 개미는 돌을 던져 비둘기를 죽이려 하는 남자를 보게 되었습니다.
그래서 남자가 돌을 던지려는 찰나, 개미가 남자의 발뒤꿈치를 물었습니다.
그 고통에 남자는 목표물을 빗나가게 던지도록 만들었고, 깜짝 놀란 비둘기는 안전하게 숲으로 날아갈 수 있었습니다.
친절은 결코 헛된 일이 아닙니다.

1. The ant couldn't get out, so out of pity, the dove dropped a stick close to it.
   개미가 빠져나오지 못하자, 비둘기는 동정심에 나뭇가지를 가까이 떨어트려 주었습니다.
   
   • out of pity는 '동정심이 ~했다'는 듯이다.
     '~에서 나온'이라는 의미가 확장되어 행동의 동기와 이유를 나타내게 된다.
   • out of love → 사랑으로, 사랑에 의해
     out of curiosity → 호기심으로, 호기심으로 인해
     out of duty → 의무감으로, 의무감으로 인해
2. Right as he threw the stone, the ant bit him on the heel.
   남자가 돌을 던지려는 찰나, 개미가 남자의 발뒤꿈치를 물었습니다.
   
   • right에는 '오른쪽', '옳은'이라는 의미 외에 '즉시', '곧바로'라는 의미가 있다.
     right은 보통 없어도 문장이 성립되는 경우가 많은데, right을 추가해서 행위를 강조하고 급박함을 더한다.
   • Don't be scared. I will be right behind you.
     무서워하지 마, 내가 바로 뒤에 있을 거야.
