'당신과 곧 이야기할 수 있기를 기대합니다.'라는 뜻이다.
forward는 '앞으로',
look forward는 '앞날을 생각하다'라는 뜻을 가진다.
그래서 look forward to 하게 되면 '~ 향해 앞날을 생각하다', 즉 '~하기를 기대하다'가 된다.
여기서 많이 하는 실수가
look forward to 뒤에 동사원형을 쓰는 것이다.
to 부정사 뒤에는 동사원형이 따른다고 배웠기 때문이다.
하지만 이 문장에서는 to 부정사가 아니라,
'~에', '~까지'의 뜻을 가진 전치사다.
전치사 뒤에는 명사가 뒤따라오는데,
여기서는 명사가 된 동사, 동명사 talking이 붙었다.
즉, 당신과 '이야기하는 행위'를 기대한다는 듯이 된다.
동일한 의미로 I hope to talk to you soon.
- I look forward to starting classes at my new school.
I look forward to making many new friends.
새 학교에서 새 학기를 맞이하게 되어 기대가 된다.
그리고 많은 친구들을 사귈 수 있기를 기대하고 있다.
