명사로 변신하는 동사 : 동명사

다음 두 문장의 watching은 어떻게 다를까?

1. I am watching a movie.
   나는 영화를 보고 있다.
   • 여기에서 watching은 동사이다.
     즉, '보고 있다'는 의미로 사용된다.
2. I enjoy watching movies.
   나는 영화 보는 것을 좋아한다.
   • 여기에서 watching은 '영화를 보는 행위'를 말한다.
   • 동사는 enjoy다.
   • 이처럼 동사 뒤에 -ing를 붙여 명사 형태로 나타내는 것을 '동명사'라고 한다.

  독서는 당신의 마음을 꽃피게 합니다.

문법 용어를 어렵게 생각할 필요가 없다.

보통 -ing는 '~하고 있다'는 의미로 사용되는데,

이렇게 '무언가를 하고 잇는 모습'이 사진처럼 고정되었다고 생각해보자.

그럼 '~하는 것', '~하는 행위'라 풀이할 수 있다.

   • “Stranger in a Strange Land” — Gates’ favorite sci-fi book from his youth, he noted — is the story of a human who was raised on Mars, by Martians.
