The more * -er ~, the more * -er ~
~할수록 더 ~하다

• The more I decorate the cake, the uglier it gets.
  케이크를 장식하면 할수록 더 이상해진다.

어떠한 행동을 하면 할수록 비례하게 결과에 영향을 미친다는 의미다.

그 결과는 긍적적일 수도, 부정적일 수도 있다.

• The more I tried to persuade her, the more she kept her distance from me.
  내가 그녀를 설득할수록, 그녀는 나에게서 더 거리를 두었다.
• The more you work out, the more fit you get.
  운동은 하면 할수록 더 건강해진다.

 

어떤 단어들은 more를 부여야 '더~'의 의미를 가지고,

어떤 단어들은 그 단어 자체에 -er을 붙인다.

• The more, The merrier.
  사람이 많을수록 더 즐겁다.
• The sooner, the better.
  빠를수록 더 좋다.

예문을 보면, 앞에 오는 단어와 뒤에 오는 단어가 대조를 이룬다.

이렇게 문장이나 단어가 대조를 이루는 경우 쉼표를 넣어 구분 짓는다.

통상적으로 강한 대조를 이루는 문장이 아니라면 쉼표를 사용할 필요가 없다.
