사슴과 사냥꾼

One day, a stag saw his reflection in the clear water while drinking from a spring.
He greatly admired the graceful arch of his antlers, but he was very ashamed of his skinny legs.
"How is it," he sighed, "that I am cursed with such skinny legs when I have such a magnificent crown."
Suddenly, he sensed a hunter nearby and immediately ran away through the forest.
He ran far away.
But after a while, his large antlers got caught in some tree branches.
The hunter caught up with him shortly after.
The deer relized that the legs he was so ashamed of would have saved him had it not been for the useless antlers.
We often make much of the ornamental and despise the userul.
어느 날, 샘물ㅇ서 물을 마시고 잇던 수사슴이 투명한 물에 비친 자신의 모습을 보았습니다.
그는 자기 뿔의 멋진 굴곡에는 감탄했지만, 자신의 마른 다리는 부끄러웠습니다.
"어째서 이렇게 환상적인 왕관을 쓰고 있는 내가 이렇게 마른 다리를 가졌을까?"
갑자기 근처에 사냥꾼이 있다는 것을 느낀 사슴은 곧바로 숲을 지나 달렸습니다.
멀리 도망가기는 했지만, 조금 있다가 사슴의 큰 뿔이 나뭇가지에 걸리게 되었습니다.
사냥군도 곧 따라잡았죠.
사삼은 자신의 쓸모없는 뿔만 아니었더라면 그토록 못 미더워하던 다리가 자신을 살릴 수 있었다는 걸 깨달았습니다.
우리는 종종 장식품을 중시하고 꼭 필요한 것을 경시하는 경향이 있습니다.

   사슴은 근처에 사냥꾼이 있다는 것을 느꼈습니다.
   • sense는 무엇에 대한 '감각', 그리고 '감지하다', '느끼다'라는 의미다.
     사슴이 사냥꾼을 보지 못했지만, 동물적 본능으로 존재를 감지한 상황에 쓰였다.
   • 우리가 흔히 감각이 좋다는 의미로 '센스가 있다'라고 말할 때,
     영어로 sense를 그대로 쓰지 않고 sense of를 사용해 어떤 감각이 좋은지 명시해야 한다.
     • a poor sense of direction : 안 좋은 방향감각
     • a good sense of fashion : 좋은 패션 감각
2. The deer relized that the legs he was so ashamed of would have saved him had it not been for the useless altlers.
   사삼은 자신의 쓸모없는 뿔만 아니었더라면 자신이 그토록 못 미더워하던 다리가 자신을 살릴 수 있었다는 걸 깨달았습니다.
   • had it not been for는 '~이 아니었다면'이라는 뜻을 가지고 있다.
   • the deer realized that
     사슴이 무엇을 깨달았습니다.
     the legs,
     어떤 다리냐면
     he was so ashamed of
     자신이 부끄러워하던 다리가
     would have saved him
     자신을 살렸을 것이라고. 하지면 여기에 조건이 하나 붙는다.
     had it not been for the useless antlers
     쓸모없는 뿔이 아니었다면
